The link between mood disorders and brain tumors runs in both directions and is easy to overstate. Here are the most-cited human studies and one key animal mechanism, grouped by the question they answer.

The honest one-paragraph summary

Population data shows people with clinical depression have a modestly higher rate of being later diagnosed with brain tumors — but a large share of that signal is reverse causation: frontal and temporal-lobe gliomas commonly present as depression months or years before any neurologic symptom or scan. Once a tumor is present, untreated depression is consistently associated with worse survival and quality of life, with plausible biology through chronic cortisol, catecholamines, NK-cell suppression, and β-adrenergic signaling on tumor cells. Anxiety alone is not a clearly established brain-cancer risk factor. Treating depression in cancer patients improves symptoms and function; survival effects are smaller and still debated.
